Safer Internet Day - Gateshead College, 10am, Tuesday 10th February 2009
Are you concerned about the safety of your child or student when they are using the Internet? If so can I take this opportunity to inform you about what we are doing to help promote Safer Internet Day.
Safer Internet Day takes place each year in February to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially amongst children and young people across the world
Since the first edition in 2004, participation in this event has been steadily growing, with an increase in general awareness, stronger involvement of relevant stakeholders in the field of Internet safety and a high level of media interest. In 2008 over 120 organisations in 56 countries took part in Safer Internet Day, organising local, national and pan-European events ranging from safety sessions in schools and competitions for young people to public meetings and conferences.
In our region we will be holding a series of events and workshops across the region. Starting with the launch, which will take place at Gateshead College on the morning of The 10th February for students, and continuing in the afternoon at Sunderland University at an event aimed at teachers, we hope to raise awareness of some of the dangers facing both young and old but also some sensible precautions to take.
We aim to follow this event later in the year with workshops and training aimed at young people aged 9 to 16, parents and teachers. If you are interested in training or finding out more about what you can do to help protect your child, student or family member then please contact us at the address below.
The Internet is a wonderful tool for us all to use and let's face it we would be lost without it! However like all things people find ways of abusing it's use and there is little accountability or regulation. That's why we all need to know how to use the Internet safely and responsibly.
